The most important decision in a registered Texas Longhorn breeding program is herd sire selection. Not only should the bull selected to be used in the breeding program be reproductively sound and be willing and able to mate the females to which he is to be exposed, he must sire live calves and increase the genetic merit of the herd. Obviously, 50% of the genetic material present in a calf comes from the sire and the other 50% comes from the dam. However, since the sire is mated to many more females than just one, the bull’s genetic contribution to the overall genetic merit of the cowherd is significantly greater than a single female.
At El Coyote, bulls that are selected to carry the El Coyote brand and retain their status as potential herd bulls must meet strict standards of excellence and possess those characteristics deemed important to El Coyote herd improvement and the genetic improvement of the Texas Longhorn industry. Each and every bull that carries the El Coyote brand qualifies under the following criteria:
- Possess an outstanding pedigree with exceptional maternal influence
- Possess outstanding individual performance in the economic important traits
- Produce herd and industry improving daughters and sons that increase the genetic merit of the industry
- Possess an outstanding combination of horn, color and conformation to be in demand by breeders in the Texas Longhorn industry
At El Coyote, we are confident in the genetic superiority of our herd bull battery and the influence that these sires will have on the industry for years to come. Feel free to inquire on progeny, semen and/or further information on any of these outstanding herd bulls. Simply click on the herd bull’s photo for additional information.
